We made it to the end, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 is my #1 destination on this list. I’ve had the pleasure of going twice, experiencing a little bit of everything from north to south.

Beaches are gorgeous, which is a given, the historic palaces and temples are all inspiring, and the capital city Colombo has just enough chaos to make it super fun.

Places like Greece, Italy, Taiwan, and even the U.S. didn’t make it! I might have to do another round. Tell me where you hope to go in 2023!

Listen, since I’m making up the rules, #2 is going to be two destinations! I’m running out of space. 🇷🇴 🇮🇸 Romania and Iceland are both runners up, for very different reasons.

Bucharest is one of the coolest cities I’ve ever seen, overcoming incredible hardship to embrace a real Renaissance in recent years. Up into the mountains is also gorgeous, alongside the Gothic castles dotted along the countryside.

Then Iceland is just another planet, boasting waterfalls, mountains, and Icelandic horses that I was determined to befriend. -Eileen

Winding down with the top three, this was really hard to choose! #3 is Japan. 🇯🇵 I still haven’t even processed all I experienced in Japan, but the cities are slick and the hot spring towns are so relaxing. Everything in between is just about perfect too, and easily reachable with the best train system in the world.

Besides the UK and and US, Spain is the country I'

Besides the UK and and US, Spain is the country I've spent the most time in. Coming in at #4, this is a place I'll visit over and over again. I left the country for the first time as a study abroad student headed for Seville in the south, and returned again for six months as an au pair a few years later. The two road trips I've taken through mainland Spain have been epic too. I even spent MONTHS learning the 'Sevillana' flamenco dance so I could try to hang at the Feria celebration and feel a real part of the action. Oh AND the islands! Menorca in the Mediterranean and Tenerife in the Canaries! All amazing! Go to Spain!

Greece comes in at #5! This country is somewhere I'm eager to visit again. I was lucky enough to be hosted by a friend's parents in Athens. They were delightful. THEN, the family offered their home on the water near the city for a short writer's retreat. I went to the island of Paros next to help promote my friend's cousin's holidays homes there, and finally met my husband in Santorini for a few days. I've never been met with such welcoming and trusting hospitality in my life. That made Greece and unforgettable experience!

#8 of my favorite places is Turkey, and nowhere near the coast! 🇹🇷 I went in the dead of winter to the center of the country where they have incredible skiing and ancient homes carved from rock. Some of the friendliest people and best food I’ve ever had is in Turkey. Some of the strangest people too-I might’ve donated a lock of my tresses to a guy who owns a hair museum?!
