As a Boston native, Irish heritage is in my blood and celebrated. I grew up watching soda bread being backed with wafting fiddle music in the air. A trip to Ireland to embrace my background was always in mind, but it took nearly 30 years for me to make the trek.
Town and cities across this beautifully green country all have a wonderful personality of their own. From pedestrian-only streets covered in colorful pubs to dramatic hillside villages boasting royal castles, Ireland is a place of exploration and a deep, rich history.
Road Trip to Sligo
For something a little more authentic, slower paced and off the grid, a visit to the town of Sligo is exactly what an adventurous family will love. Surrounded by a wonderfully fun musical tradition, this destination provides something friendly and fun for all ages.
When making your way to Sligo, about a three-hour cross-country drive from Dublin, you’ll want to stay as central as possible. The town as made for walking, and leaving your front door to experience all the action in minutes is a must. The Sligo City Hotel is a wonderful option for guests to the area that appreciate comfort in an excellent location. The front desk is super helpful when planning on what to do and see in town as well, from al fresco lunches and shopping to abbey-exploring and beyond. They can help plan walking tours and even day tips outside town along the Wild Atlantic Way coastline.
Music and Magic
While in town for the Fleadh Cheoil Irish music festival, The Sligo City Hotel provided a nice escape from the hubbub of the center. One evening we opted to stay in and had the onsite pub to ourselves with a live fiddler and singer. Although rowdy some nights, this weekday evening with some Irish tunes and hearty meals was perfect for a family – and within a stone throw of our cozy beds when we were sleepy.
Speaking of the room, there are various sizes for everyone’s needs. There’s specific family rooms with single and double beds that fit four or more adults and kids, as well as attached individual rooms for larger groups. The spaces are quiet and comfortable, away from most street noise and activity downstairs.
Most reservations include a delicious and authentic Irish breakfast. This could be the time to introduce the kiddos to black and white ‘pudding’, which is a kind of blood sausage. Maybe those who dare try the delicacy could win a prize from the Irish sweet shop only a few buildings down the street.
The Sligo City Hotel is clean, outfitted with modern features and within a 10-minute walk to the river in the town center. It’s an excellent selection for a weekend (or a whole week) in the charming town of Sligo.
