fishplates_1This travel activity for kids will engage their imagination as well as help develop their knowledge of the amazing tropical fish species in the Caribbean. Have fun creating fish shapes from paper plates and imagine all sorts of vibrant patterns and colors on their scales, fins and tails.

This travel art can be done in:

  • Cars
  • Planes
  • Trains
  • Hotel rooms

What you will need:

  • Paper plates
  • Felt tips, pencils or crayons
  • Safety scissors
  • Colored stickers—optional

aquarium_1Directions:

  1. Collect all materials and put them in a plastic lidded ready for transporting. For younger children, you may decide to pre-cut the fish shapes from the plates, so they just do the coloring in.
  2. Give your children a tray to work on and ask them what they imagine tropical fish look like, or talk about the ones you may have seen on holiday. What size are they? What colors are their scales, fins, tails, eyes? What do they eat? Make up a name for them.
  3. Invite them to create their own tropical fish species.
  4. When you get home, explore this theme further—create a tropical aquarium! The example uses fabrics for the sea and sand, shells, pebbles and finger knitting for the seaweed, and of course, the beautiful fish made from simple paper plates!
