Your family has done it all. You’ve hiked the Grand Canyon, kayaked the Hudson River and rode all the roller coasters at Busch Gardens. Your older kids loved the RV trip to Colorado, the bike trip along the Cape Cod Canal and ice skating in Rockefeller Park in New York City.
So what’s next? Segways, obviously.
You might have a vague idea of what Segways are—they are those crazy two-wheeled, futuristic contraptions that were invented a few years ago. These vehicles are perfect for viewing cities, especially when getting to know the area and looking to have an easy, breezy orientation before diving deep into the urban offerings.
San Francisco is a hilly, beautiful spot right on a scenic bay, offering temperate weather year-round to west coast wanderers. Some cities seem to be made perfectly for bikes and walking—but not San Fran. Segways glide effortlessly though this fantastic destination.
City Segway San Francisco is based right in Fisherman’s Wharf on the water as the go-to spot for all those visiting. You and your older children will have a full orientation by trained staff and will be zipping through the training area in no time. Once you’re all used to the rocking and weight shifting steering, time to hit the town.
Each tour is different, but I recommend the intro experience to get an overview of some of the best parts of San Francisco. You’ll love the witty verbal commentary, zip-by views of Telegraph Hill and Ghirardelli Square, before taking a leisurely glide past Alcatraz and a small local beach. The most fun your family will have is free styling along the pier, where you can really let your Segway fly (well, up to 8 miles an hour). Kids will be thrilled with a little freedom! Snap a group photo at the end of the pier with panoramic views of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge behind you.
There’s a few things you’ll need to know before your Segway adventure in San Francisco to insure the whole clan has a wonderful time:
- Kids must be at least 12 years old to ride a Segway. Each city is different too, so check ahead for restrictions.
- Everyone must also be at least 100 pounds to navigate the Segway. Everyone gets a helmet too!
- Groups are kept small, but the Segways are driven in bike lanes along main roads, so chat with your younger kids about safety ahead of time. The guides will also go over everything you need to know.
